We had a fabulous weekend planting trees with friends and family. We dug keyline swales by hand on some of our steeper slopes. Swales are the trenches in the photos which slope gently down from the valley to the ridge to slowly move water from the wetter areas to the drier hillsides. We planted blueberries, apples, mulberries, persimmons, and currants along these new swales and cleared lots of prickly ash. Thanks to all who helped for their hard work! We can’t wait to chow down on the fruits of our labor in a few years!
For the next few weeks we’ll be spending our days surveying and cutting keyline swales, and planting thousands of fruit and nut trees. Email us if you’d like to come and help for a day!
